Re: BREAKING: AP Says Clinton To Concede Tonight (none / 0)

concede or suspend?

by colebiancardi on Tue Jun 03, 2008 at 10:59:01 AM EST

Re: BREAKING: AP Says Clinton To Concede Tonight (none / 0)

Im not sure the LEGAL difference between the two.

I know what suspend means (thanks waxman romney) but say she uses the word 'concede', Does that mean she could not be the nominee, say Obama gets struck by lightening or some other freak tragic event?

Re: BREAKING: AP Says Clinton To Concede Tonight (none / 0)

there is a HUGE difference.

concede means she releases her delegates.

suspend means she holds on to her delegates.

Re: BREAKING: AP Says Clinton To Concede Tonight (none / 0)

Thanks colebiancardi,  another thing I don't need to learn from Chuck Todd.

So funny how so many civilians (including myself) had to learn or relearn the whole delegate system.

I dont think anyone will forget going foward. :)

They're saying "She'll acknowledge Obama has enough delegates to win the nomination".

That sounds a bit too much like "...and then spend the summer trying to flip his delegates," but I guess we'll know more tonight.

Same difference. I believe Edwards is still suspended, but Biden conceded. I think the difference is mostly about financial issues.

I'm Sure You've Seen By Now, (none / 0)

but it's kinda vague looking to me. She'll acknowledge that he has the delegates to win and congratulate him on that. I mean, it seems that it would follow that she'd end her campaign, but who really knows?

Re: I'm Sure You've Seen By Now, (2.00 / 2)

I bet she'll suspend the campaign. That's what Edwards did.  There may even be legal reasons to do so, in terms of maintaining the campaign organization and finishing out its business.

Re: I'm Sure You've Seen By Now, (2.00 / 1)

suspend = you hold to your delegates
concede = you release them

I think she will suspend as well.

Yeah, I'd Be Shocked (2.00 / 1)

if she went straight to releasing her delegates. So far, though, the AP doesn't seem to be using EITHER term.

I wonder, even as an Obama supporter, why she would choose this time to make this announcement? I mean, I would have not expected her to say anything until after the Primaries today. Seems odd, but that's politics, I guess...

Re: Yeah, I'd Be Shocked (2.00 / 1)

because Obama probably will reach the magic number tonight.

He will state he is the nominee.  He will give her time to talk about suspending her campaign and then he will come out with his speech

He is at the GOP site for the convention tonight.  I doubt he wants to wait until tomorrow or later this week to state he is the nominee

Re: Yeah, I'd Be Shocked (none / 0)

He absolutely would prefer not to wait.  Tonight is the Hollywood ending with the elections in SD and MT concluding the primaries.  Announcing later in the week will not get near the exposure or have the same emotional impact.

Choreographed (none / 0)

within an inch of its life. Politicians kinda piss me off with this playing on our emotions - and I level that equally in this case.

Now, MSNBC says the story is being denied by the Clinton Campaign... Get ready for incoming!

Re: Choreographed (none / 0)

I hope she concedes and gives the delegates.

That equals party unity.

If she concedes she still might have the chance at VP, as long as Clinton, Obama, and the media sell it as the ultimate unity offering from Hillary.

All I can say is I hope it benefits us, DEMOCRATIC voters the most.

Have to think Obama has the supers to put him over the top and Clinton knows it.  It looks better (for both her and Obama) to bow out gracefully than to appear pushed out.

Clinton To Concede Tonight (2.00 / 1)

Hillary Clinton ran a strong race and helped brake barriers for women everywhere.  She si a good Democrat.  Her supporters should be proud of her.

I know people are hurt.  I went through it with Edwards when he dropped out.  Those of you who worked so hard for Hillary Clinton have one more task to do: listen to her tonight with an open mind.  Show her that respect.

Some may be hurt and decide to supprot McCain.  that's your right. But at least listen to what she says tonight. Listen with your hearts.

by TomP on Tue Jun 03, 2008 at 11:00:20 AM EST

regardless of what she will say or do, 20% ... (none / 0)

regardless of what she will say or do, 20% to 50% of her supporters will vote for McCain if Obama is nominee.
McCain needs just 10% of this supporters for a landslide victory.
And he will get those 10% from Latinos, women and white working people and may be even a few votes from seniors.

You may believe that, (2.00 / 2)

but I hope you are wrong.

McCain is everything Senator Clinton has fought her entire life against.

I'm certain she will work very hard for Obama's election this fall.  And I think she wil help Obama defeat McCain.

Re: regardless of what she will say or do, 20% ... (none / 0)

I think any democrat that would vote for McCain because Clinton did not win is either racsist or just plain stupid ........ and Hillary Clinton would agree there is no reason to go to McCain unless you are racsist that is basically the only thing she has in common with McCain is the skin color because it is certainly not their policies

Re: Clinton To Concede Tonight (2.00 / 2)

I talked to a lot of Edwards supporters right after he dropped out and they told me that they weren't ready to move on right then.  So I understand.

It's very hard when someone you strongly support drops out of a race.  And it will take time. There's certainly some grief and pain.

Got a link?  All I've heard is speculation.

If you're talking about the McAuliffe story, a more on-point headline would be: "AP says McAuliffe says Clinton will probably concede."

Re: BREAKING: AP Says Clinton To Concede Tonight (none / 0)

Got it.  The wording's a little more careful, though, in keeping with the Clinton tendency to parse.  It seems like she's prepared to "acknowledge that he has enough delegates to secure the nomination."

Which is not quite the same thing as conceding that he's the nominee.

We'll all have to watch her speech carefully tonight.  I'm fully expecting her to leave herself some kind of out.  Dreams die hard, and I'm sure she'll be tempted to leave a back door (ie, suspending instead of ending) so she can at least tell herself it's not over.

Re: BREAKING: AP Says Clinton To Concede Tonight (none / 0)

I think this is based on what McAuliffe said. At least that is what Ben Smith at Politico is saying...

While I hope this is true, I've been hearing so many mixed messages from the Clinton Campaign about what to expect tonight that I refuse to believe any of it until she says so herself.

Doesn't Appear to be Rumor (none / 0)

but the timing is kinda weird. After everything else, why NOT wait until after today. Even as an Obama supporter who has wanted this to happen, I'm a bit perplexed...

Re: Doesn't Appear to be Rumor (none / 0)

If Obama gets the super support today, he'll declare victory and the media will acknowledge it.  If Clinton has accepted the inevitable, then it's probably better for the party and her political future to get on board sooner rather than later.

I'll be there tonight (2.00 / 4)

I got my invite and just printed my ticket to her event here in NYC tonight.

I'll be screaming my fool head off for her. Whatever SHE decides to do next, I am behind her 100%.

Tonight we celebrate her, her history-making campaign and her 17million+ supporters!

Cannot wait... this will be the 4th time I see her this election season. She speaks to me, she speaks for me, she inspires me.

Hillary!

Re: AP says (2.00 / 1)

HuffPo seems to be reporting something along these lines. Though in the title they use the word "concede" and in the body text they quote official (anon.) sources about Clinton making a strategic decision to not formally end her campaign, for leverage in negotiations.

perhaps not? (none / 0)

I wonder if she is going to concede. The release says she'll acknowledge that Obama has more delegates. She could do that and say she's suspending in order to give superdelegates a period to think about this after the active nomination campaign is over.

CNN just replaced it's earlier breaking news about the concession to state that she was NOT ready to make this statement. No details yet.

Ok, it's official. From cnn.com:

Terry McAuliffe rejected as "100 percent incorrect" media reports that Clinton is preparing to concede the race Tuesday night as the five-month Democratic primary process comes to a close.
